Rome Airports

Rome has 2 airports on it's outskirts, the first is the Leonardi da Vinci airport (Fiumicino Airport) which is used by the major mainstream carries such as BA and Air Italia. This airport is around 22 miles from the centre of Rome but has excellent transport links via the Leonardo Express.

The Leonardo Express is a direct train service with the main railway station in Rome. Tickets cost just over 11 Euros (each way) and must be stamped by the automated machines before you board the train. The Leonardo Express runs every 30 minutes and takes 15 minutes to complete.

You will usually find that flights to this airport are a little more expensive, this is because it is ultimately the bigger and better airport with better transport links and all of that comes at a price.

Rome's second airport is called Ciampino airport and was Rome's major airport until Fiumicino opened. The reason it has been surpassed by it's sister airport is that it didn't have the room to expand and didn't have the ability to intergrate a transport system that connects to Rome.

Ciampino is mianly used by the budgets airlines as the landing fees are much cheaper than the main airport. If you fly with Easyjet or Ryan air then you will be using this airport.

You will find most of the major hire car firms on this airport, from organisation such as Avis, Europcar, Hertz and others.
